Originally hailing from the 1699 manor home of Indian Banks in Farnham, Virginia, these bricks found new life here at the Tavern after the manor's chimney was struck by lightning and rebuilt with modern bricks.

These historic bricks have been repurposed to create our patio's walls, ramp, and steps, alongside bricks sourced directly from our property. Their age is evident in the unique marks and fingerprints visible in the first picture. These imprints tell a story of craftsmanship, each brick meticulously handled by individuals during the molding process.

In times gone by, brick-making was a labor-intensive art, with each brick crafted by hand. From digging and tempering the clay to molding and firing it in kilns, the process was intricate and time-consuming. This hands-on approach imbued the bricks with character, a quality often missing in more modern, industrially produced bricks.

During the Industrial Revolution, brick-making underwent a transformation, embracing steel molds and hydraulic presses for faster production. While this brought efficiency and strength, it couldn't replicate the charm of the old-fashioned bricks.
