Elegant Overhanging Light

Some pieces of history aren’t just inherited—they’re rediscovered and revived.
The elegant hanging light that now illuminates our front entrance may look like a vintage carriage lantern—and while we’re not entirely sure of its origin, its story is a special one that’s close to home.
This particular light once hung just across the street at the Essex Inn, right in its front doorway. When our owners purchased the Inn years ago, the light was already there—worn by time and no longer working, but undeniably full of character. While it was eventually replaced with a functioning fixture, this one wasn’t discarded. Something about it felt too important, too full of story to let go.
So it was tucked away, carefully held onto for just the right moment.
And when 1710 Tavern came into the picture, they knew exactly where that light belonged. With the help of a skilled electrician (and a little patience), the old fixture was restored to working order. Today, it proudly hangs at the entrance of our beloved tavern—offering a soft, timeless glow to everyone who walks through our doors.
Whether it once lit the way for arriving carriages or simply welcomed guests to another historic Virginia home, it now continues its purpose in a new setting—bridging the past and present with every flicker.
So next time you visit, take a look above. That light has seen stories, welcomed travelers, and waited patiently for its next chapter. We’re proud to give it one.
