Toby Mugs on Display!
Ever seen these charming ceramic characters peering out from our shelves? These are Toby Mugs, and they come with quite the tale!
Born in 18th-century England, Toby Mugs (and their full-bodied cousins, Toby Jugs) were originally modeled after a stout, merry fellow enjoying a pint—legend has it, a tribute to a famous drinker named Toby Fillpot. Over time, the design shifted to these whimsical, detailed mugs featuring characters from folklore, history, and tavern life.
Here at 1710 Tavern, we’re proud to display three of these delightful mugs—each with its own unique expression and story to tell. They add a little old-world charm to our shelves and a nod to the long and lively tradition of public houses and good cheer.
Next time you're visiting, see if you can spot them tucked among our pewter collection—cheers to history, humor, and a well-poured pint!
