Archway
Welcome back to another Tavern History Tuesday! This week, we’re shining a spotlight on one of the subtle yet essential features of our Tavern’s restoration—the beautiful archway that stands proudly in the center of the building. Though it may look like a simple architectural element, the story behind this archway reflects the care, craftsmanship, and dedication that went into preserving the authenticity of our historic structure.
During the early stages of renovation, it became clear that additional support was needed to stabilize the middle of the building. Our team of restoration experts, committed to maintaining the integrity of the Tavern, knew this was no ordinary task. They sought out traditional craftsmanship methods that would enhance the structure while preserving its historic character.
To achieve this, we turned to an Amish sawmill across the river in Warsaw to mill the lumber. Using locally sourced wood helped ensure that the materials were as authentic and true to the period as possible, honoring the original craftsmanship of the Tavern. The Amish craftsmen brought their exceptional skills and time-honored techniques to the project, hand-installing the arch with wooden pegs and mortises—a method that has been used for centuries. The archway was not simply added for aesthetic value but was thoughtfully designed to bear the load of the building, providing much-needed support to the structure's central section.
Furthermore, additional piers were constructed in the basement directly beneath the archway. These piers work together with the arch to carry the weight of the middle of the building, ensuring the stability and longevity of the Tavern. Each element, from the selection of the wood to the precise installation, was carried out with meticulous attention to detail, reflecting a deep respect for the history and heritage of our beloved establishment.
The archway stands as a testament to the dedication that went into revitalizing the Tavern. It embodies the blend of old-world craftsmanship and modern engineering, helping to safeguard this building’s rich history for future generations to enjoy. Next time you visit, take a moment to admire the archway and appreciate the craftsmanship that helped bring our Tavern back to life. Thank you for joining us for this week’s Tavern History Tuesday, and we look forward to sharing more stories with you next time!
