What's upstairs?

Welcome once again to another captivating installment of Tavern History Tuesday! We know many of you share a deep fascination with our upstairs quarters, a historically rich part of the Tavern that once served as a resting place for weary travelers. Due to your overwhelming interest and curiosity about this enigmatic space, we are thrilled to continue shedding light on its unique charm and storied past.

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is: What does the upper floor look like, both in the past and now? To satisfy your curiosity, we are delighted to share some remarkable photographs from the restoration of our beloved upstairs area. These images offer a glimpse into the careful craftsmanship that preserved the original structure while restoring its timeless beauty.

The construction of the upper floor remains largely original. The robust rafters and joists, still very much intact, have been gently reinforced to ensure their preservation. The floors, a stunning testament to the past, are comprised of in-refinished original heart pine, exuding a warmth and authenticity that harks back to the Tavern's early days. As you ascend, you will also discover two magnificent fireplaces—one directly above the bar, and the other positioned above the dining room, nearest Prince Street. These features add to the historic ambiance of this treasured space.

In our efforts to honor the integrity of the building, we made a conscious decision to install traditional insulation rather than opting for modern foam or blown-in alternatives. This choice was made to preserve the original construction techniques, maintaining the historical accuracy of the Tavern’s upper quarters.

We sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed this deeper dive into the mysteries of our upstairs quarters, and we are delighted to share the incredible history that resides within these walls. It brings us immense joy to have preserved such a significant part of the Tavern, allowing us to pass this piece of history on to you.

Until our next Tavern History Tuesday, stay curious, and don't hesitate to stop by and experience the wonder of this special place for yourself!
